Human activity creates waste. The problem isn’t new and space is no exception to the rule. Dead satellites, rocket stages and other things are littering our planet’s orbit. They are getting dangerously close to space stations and there is a great possibility of an accident. Space stations could be completely destroyed by the rubbish. In 1983, a tiny piece of paint from a satellite made a big hole in the side window of a spaceship. There is a great need to “clean up” space and to take away 3,000 tons of space rubbish. To solve the problem, scientists and engineers are designing special spaceships that will collect and recycle space rubbish.

Netball is played by over 20 million people in more than 70 countries of the world. It was invented in 1892 as women’s basketball. However, netball is different from basketball in many ways. For example, the ball and the basket are smaller and the court is bigger. The players cannot run with the ball. They are not allowed to touch the players who they are playing with. Netball has seven players in each team (not five as in basketball). During the 20th century, the game became very popular in English-speaking countries. Traditionally, only girls and women have played netball. Nowadays, netball is the number one women’s sport in the world but boys and men are starting to play it too.

Studies of the atmosphere first received technical support in 1912. Equipment to measure temperature and pressure was invented in Germany. But the question was how to raise it high into the air. In 1921, Russian engineers suggested using planes. The special equipment was put on planes that made regular flights. Thanks to this, scientists got a lot of new information about the structure of the atmosphere. Nowadays scientists use modern flying laboratories to study the structure of clouds at different levels. Unlike the first planes, these laboratories can work in any weather and are able to predict climate changes.

Recycling is a technology that helps protect the environment and cut down on usage of raw materials. The steel, paper and glass industries recycle a lot. The largest recycler is the steel industry. It recovers more than 70 per cent of its original materials. For example, since 1988 they have produced the majority of new metal cans from old ones. Metal parts for cars and planes are other examples of recycling steel. Fragments of waste glass are widely used in construction. For producing writing paper and pens, used packing boxes are an ideal material. They are cheap and easy to recycle. Nowadays more and more recycling centres are appearing in our towns and cities.

The human brain is the most complex and remarkable organ of the body. It controls everything we do  thinking, learning, and even heart rate. Though the brain makes up only 2 percent of the body's weight, it uses around 20 percent of its energy. It works 24 hours a day. Even when a person is sleeping, the brain is working hard to keep other organs functioning. Most people think that our brain is more active during the daytime because it needs to deal with a great amount of information. In fact, that’s not true. The brain is far more active when a person is sleeping! However, scientists don’t yet have any explanation for this fact.

The word ‘tsunami’ can be translated from Japanese as ‘big wave’. It describes a natural process that can be dangerous for people and their homes. Most of the huge waves appear after earthquakes. Most waves are born in the Indian and the Pacific Oceans where volcanoes are active. The mass of water rises from the bottom of the ocean and moves to the shore. It moves at the speed of a plane and can be up to 40 meters high. The wave is very powerful and dangerous. In 2004, a tsunami happened in the Indian Ocean. It was one of most terrible natural disasters in history. It hit 14 countries bordering the Indian Ocean. Thousands of people were killed or went missing.

I love my love beginning with L

She looks lovely, like a lady from a land
of lakes, lagoons, lady-birds, laurel trees
lilacs & little yellow lilies-of-the-valley.

Her lips look like the leaves of these laurel trees early in the morning light. Linda is her lyrical name, listen, it’s like a lyre playing for the little flowers by the clear waters of the silver lake. Even larks come to listen to this lullyby. The luckiest man on this land is he, whom Linda likes to loan her heart to. Who will see her goldilocks in daylight. Who will walk hand-in-hand with her along the road of life. I believe, Linda is a fair lady for any nobleman….

Read the text and say how the introduction of Christianity influenced            the       development of the Shor tribes.

CHILDREN OF NATURE

The forefathers of the Shors were pagans and shamen. The ancient belief in spirits, the worshiping of animals, the ancestors cult and witchcraft made them real children of nature. They were helpless against the forces of nature although clever and experienced in their own way. Their moon calendar was a great achievement using which they were able to make amazingly accurate weather forecasts.
The Shors worshiped the hill from where the water ran and on which his yurta stood. Moreover the hill was considered as a living being and had its character, sometimes capricious, sometimes angry and revengeful.
The worshiping was done by the kam-shamen, using several tambourines. This noisy and extremely emotional ritual not only captured imagination but it also called the gods, ensured their help, and cherished the beliefs of people in a happy future. Due to this ritual the Shors became aware of the fact that the soul was connected with a string to the god who created the soul.
Everyday wisdom and experience of the forest people could be seen in everything. Their skills were then passed on to subsequent generations. The Shor hunters would never shoot a sleeping animal, it had to be woken. Making clay crockery the Shors would add wool to make it strong. Fishing nets were made of horse hair, which was never caught by the frost in winter. Hunting was available only to men. Women were strictly forbidden to hunt. This was a tabu: the one who gives birth must not kill. If a Shor died in winter, he would be wrapped into a birch bark and hung to a tree deep in the taiga. This was done not because of barbarism, but for the reason of “deep snows”. The winter would “step away” and allow the man to be buried.
The local people were turned into Christianity at the same time as the Kuznetsk city was founded. It was done slowly, without haste. The Russian missionaries kept the old principle: “by care not brutality”. According to the tsar’ decree, in 1858 near the river Kondoma the so-called Altai mission (church) was established.  Turning into Christianity was beneficial to the Shors. Gradually families with several wives disappeared, “kalim” ransom was no longer demanded for the daughter to be married, and the girls were no longer sold to grown up husbands.
The Christian missionaries considered the study of the folk customs to be very efficient in learning the secrets of the pagan aborigines, their religious reception of the world. They were the first who used the opportunity to record the folk customs. But their “kondoba people’s” stories were never published, never reached the contemporary time.
The Shors didn’t have the written language, one of the reasons why the people’s oral inspirations were well developed, passing their roots deep into centuries. Among these were songs, legends, fairy tales, stories about warriors and their heroic deeds, sayings. The research works by V.V. Radlov, V.I. Verbitsky, N.P. Direnkova contributed greatly to the preservation of the Shor folklore.

1. The moon calendar was a great achievement because
      a) it helped the local tribes to worship animals.

2. The worshiping ritual was  extremely emotional because
      a) it was done by sharmen.
      b) it inspired the idea of the unity with gods.
      c) it was done with tambourines.

3. The dead bodies of the Shors were hung to a tree in winter because
      a) of their barbarism.
      b) of the climate.
      c) they lived in the taiga.

4. The local tribes were turned into Christianity because
      a) Kuznetsk city was founded.
      b) they didn’t want to pay “kalim” ransom.
      c) it was the policy of the Russian government.

5. Oral inspiration was well developed because
      a) of the research works by V.V. Radlov, V.I. Verbitsky, N.P. Direnkova.
      b) of the absence of the written language

      c)  the Christian missionaries recorded the folk customs.

It is a long and wide river, which flows through many towns and cities of our region. I live in the center of the city. This part of the city is modern and very beautiful. There is the circus and the Museum of Fine Arts there. I like walking along the streets of the city with my friends or parents.
People call Novokuznetsk “a garden city”. My native city is a beautiful place and it is very important for me. What is your native city like? Where can you entertain yourself? Where do you like to go in your free time?

Alan Alexander Milne 1882-1956
I often wish I were a King,
And then I could do anything.

If only I were King of Spain,
I'd take my hat off in the rain.

If only I were King of France,
I wouldn't brush my hair for aunts.

I think, if I were King of Greece,
I'd push things off the mantelpiece.
If I were King of Norroway,
I'd ask an elephant to stay.

If I were King of Babylon,
I'd leave my button gloves undone.

If I were King of Timbuctoo,
I'd think of lovely things to do.

If I were King of anything,
I'd tell the soldiers, "I'm the King!"

My favourite book is  a historical novel by a well-known Scotish author Walter Scott "Ivanhoe" . The book is well-written and that's why it is easy to read. The plot of the book is captivating. It is set in England in the 12 century. The main character of the book is Ivanhoe. He is noble, brave and devoted. ...
...I enjoy this book because it is both thought-provoking and entertaining. It makes me think about friendship and devotion. It teaches me to  be brave and value my friends  and relatives.

Let us talk about Moscow

Moscow Must-See Sights

The Russian capital Moscow is 860 years old and one of the most historically rich cities in the world. It is the biggest city in the country and the fifth biggest city of our planet. It lies on the banks of the River Moskva and is home to over 11 million people. With many beautiful architectural places, the city is a tourist’s paradise. The city's so large it can be difficult to decide where to go. So . . . in order to get a taste of what Moscow means to Russia, what should you see if you don’t know where to start?
The Moscow Kremlin is a must-see for visitors to Moscow and one of the best things to do in the Russian capital city. Once inside, you can visit Cathedral Square  to see beautiful cathedrals which were visited   by the tsars and their families. Also on display are the Tsar Bell and Tsar Cannon, two immobile monuments of Russia past. Don’t forget the Armory Museum, either, which holds precious relics of Imperial stature, such as gold-gilt carriages and silver-threaded royal garments.

Red Square

Just outside the Kremlin is the famous Red Square. There you can watch the changing of the guard at the Eternal Flame or visit Lenin’s Tomb  If St. Basil’s Cathedral is open, explore it—it is as beautiful  inside as  outside. And  one more advice for Red Square: visit it in the  the evening  when there are no tourists. It’s magical!

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

It is one of the primary places  in the country which every visitor  must see in Moscow. It is built in the shape of a bonfire in 1560 and is not like any other Russian building.According to the legend when Ivan theTerrible saw the cathedral finished he ordered to blind the architects   so that they wouldn't be able to build such a beautiful church anywhere else.  In 1990, it was labeled as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

State Tretyakov Gallery

The State Tretrakov Gallery has the best collection of Russian art. Repin, Vrubel, Kandinsky, Chagall, and many more Russian artists are represented here—open any book on Russian art and most of the famous pieces will be hanging in the Tretyakov. However, a book can’t do these paintings justice.

Pushkin Fine Arts Museum

While the Tretyakov Gallery houses Russia's greatest art works, the Pushkin Fine Arts Museum holds a great collection of foreign -born artists' masterpieces. If you like Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and Renaissance art, you'll enjoy the Pushkin Fine Arts Museum.

Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the most famous theatre in Moscow. The theatre shows around 3-4 different operas and 2-3 ballets each year. The focus is on classical masterpieces from composers such as Mozart, Verdi, Wagner, and Tchaikovsky. Russian ballet is world famous and is an important part of the Russian culture.

Old Arbat Street

Old Arbat Street is Moscow's most famous thoroughfare. Old Arbat Street is tourist-oriented, and you'll be able to find some not-so-unusual souvenirs here. There are always  artists, musicians, or jugglers looking for your attention. Old Arbat Street is completely pedestrian, which means it's great for people watching.

Victory Park

Moscow's Victory Park memorializes the Great Patriotic War.You'll find WWII memorials all over Russia, but Victory Park is Moscow's home for these monuments, sculptures, fountains, and obelisks.

GUM (State Department Store)

GUM is Moscow's most famous shopping center. It is situated near Red Square. It doesn't look like a shop and it's easy to pass it by if you don't know it's there. You'll find all Kinds of boutiques there. If you just want to window shop, buy an ice cream from  and browse at your leisure.
Moscow Metro

The Moscow metro is famous for its architecture and the stations called “underground palaces of Moscow” have become main sights of the city.

The old, pre-war stations symbolise the industrialisation of Russia, whereas the post-war ones were made to symbolise victory and pride of the nation. The first metro line was the Sokolnicheskaya, built in 1935.
"Majakovskaya" is considered one of the most beautiful stations.
Among others, "Revolution Square", "Kropotkinskaya", "Komsomolskaya", "Novoslobodskaya" are considered the most interesting architectural monuments of 1930-1950.
Some of them are also protected by the state as valuable cultural objects. The underground complexes are decorated by statues, monuments and art such as paintings, mosaics, and stained-glass windows. The idea was to give every station an individual shape and appearance.

Task4.  Study the basic story.
One of the most burning problems of contemporary life is the ecological situation on the planet of earth. In fact, cities and towns, industrial complexes and enterprises cover the world like a huge net, absorbing the air and polluting the atmosphere at great extends.  The smoky industrial monsters have become the threat to the water we drink, the air we breathe, the land we grow grain and vegetables on. Kuzbass is an important integral part of Russian industrial system, its  coal is often called “the black gold” of Russia. The mining industry gets along with automobile and textile branches, chemistry and ferro-metallurgy. It’s not for nothing that the population of the region realizes how dangerous it is to develop industries without caring the environmental situation. Statistics proves that every year world industry pollutes the atmosphere with about 1000 million tons of dust and other harmful substances. Many cities suffer from smog. Vast forests are cut and burn in fire. Their disappearance upsets the oxygen balance. As a result some rare species of animals, birds, fish and plants disappear forever, a number of rivers and lakes dry up. The pollution of air and the world's ocean, destruction of the ozone layer is the result of man's careless interaction with nature, a sign of the ecological crisis.
As far as Kuzbass is concerned, the facts are also alarming: more than 1,5 million tons of industrial dust pollute the atmosphere of the region  we live in. It is equal to 60 per cent of the same industrial wastes of the joint territory of Novosibirsk, Tomsk and the Altai regions.
If you happen to visit Novokuznetsk some day you will find it hard to breathe, because the air is heavy with the industrial wastes of the great metallurgy plants the city is famous for.
The coal mining territories add to the pollution of the air and water; even the snow in winter looks dirty and poisoned.
The chemical industry of Kuzbass is no less dangerous for human health, the unburned waste makes breathing difficult.
One shouldn’t forget the transport in the region, which is quite numerous. The roads are heavy day and night, the pollution increases and the whole wild life is the victim.
Task 5. Enlarge the statements with facts and arguments:
1.     One of the most burning problems of contemporary life is the ecological situation on the planet of earth.
2.     Statistics claims that every year world industry pollutes the atmosphere.
3.     Kuzbass is an integral part of Russian industrial system.
4.     As far as Kuzbass concerned the dates are also alarming.
5.     The main threat to nature comes from the human activity.
6.     Still, much can be done to save the planet from the environmental catastrophe.

IF and When clauses

If (when) he comes we'll go to the country/ -

If the weather is good on Sunday, I'll go for a walk in the park.

I'll visit Martin when I go to London.

If you read in bed, you will ruin your eyes.

Tell him everything if he asks.

The Passive Voice
  • He was helped by Ann.-

The Passive Voice образуется при помощи вспомогательного глагола to be в соответствующем времени, лице и числе и причастия прошедшего времени смыслового глагола Participle II:
The Passive Voice
to be + Participle II

Passive VoicePresentPastFuture

Indefinite
Continuous

Perfect
am/are/is give

am/are/is being given

has/have been given

was/were given

was/were being given

had been given
shall/will be given

-

shall/will have been given

  • John isn't helped by Ann. -
  • John hasn't been helped by Ann. -

  • Is John helped by Ann? -
  • Has John been helped by Ann? -
Сказуемому в действительном залоге, выраженному сочетанием одного из модальных глаголов can (could), may (might), should, ought и т.д.
  • We must finish our work as soon as possible. -
  • Our work must be finished as soon as possible. -
  • You ought to translate this article at once. -
  • This article ought to be translated at once. -
  • The book was written by O.Wilde. -
  • The room was filled with smoke. -
  • The finger was cut with a knife. -
е. фразы, указывающей на деятеля производимого действия: to follow, to overtake, to seize, to visit, to govern, to characterize, to attract, to control, to rule, to influence, to confront, to attend, to accompany, to join, to cause, to bring about, to mark и т.д.:
  • Не is followed by the police.
  • Now  do the test at the end of the page
