The Power of ‘Hello’

When I was about 10 years old, I was walking down the street with my mother. She stopped to speak to Mr. Lee. I knew I could see Mr. Lee any time around the neighborhood, В ______ .

I remembered after a few years of passing by the founder, I had the courage to ask him for a meeting. We had a great talk.
At a certain point, I asked him E ______ . He said, ‘If you want to, you can get all the way to this seat.’ I have become vice president, but that has not changed the way I approach people. I. You are going to read a magazine article about marathon running. Seven sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A-H the one which fits each gap (1-6). There is one extra sentence which you do not need to use. There is an example at the beginning.

Marathon running – a recipe for health? If ever there was living proof that marathon running keeps you fit, Jenny Wood Allen from Dundee is it. (0 – H) She was 71 and she did not even have proper training shoes then. At first she could only run to the end of her avenue, which is about three quarters of a mile. She had problems getting back and had to either take a bus or ask somebody for a lift. (1 - ) Scientifically speaking, human beings are perfectly tuned for jumping and running and walking long distances. (2 - ) One of them, Professor Craig Sharp says that if you are reasonably fit, you can probably run for two hours at a medium pace and feel OK. At this point your muscles run out of glycogen – the best source of energy we have. This means you start using fat for energy, and your body has to work harder to transform fat into energy. This happens at a time when you are starting to feel exhausted. (3 - ) All this is proof – he believes – that the body isn’t designed for long-distance running. Other specialists have a very different opinion. Dr Percy Brown believes that if you train sensibly and prepare several months in advance, it could even help you live longer. (4 - ) He believes the only problem you may have when running a marathon is exhaustion or a small injury caused by falling or tripping over things. (5 - ) Only 1 in 1,000 actually makes it to hospital. Another problem may be post-race exhaustion. Surveys show most runners are much more likely to catch colds or develop chest infections in the week after running a race. (6 - ) There is no evidence of lasting disease or an increased risk of illness. At 87, Jenny Wood Allen would be doing the London marathon for the 13th time this Sunday. And she plans to go on taking part for many years to come.

A He argues that after 16-20 miles, you have to slow down and running gets really hard.
b. After a quick top up of water and a rest, most go home and make a full recovery.
c. When it comes to marathon running, however, the experts are divided.
d. In spite of this, marathon running is bad for your health.
e. But this weakening effect on the system is short-lived.
f.Within a couple of months, however, she was managing two or three miles.
g.This is because running halves your risk of getting heart disease.
h. She started by running to the shops, wearing an anorak and carrying her shopping bag

II.  Complete the sentences with the correct preposition from the box. There is one preposition you do not need to use. Some of the prepositions can be used more than once.

at       down      off     in     over     to      through      on      from

1. Can you get the lid _________ this jar for me, please?
2. The river Thames flows ___________ London.
3. As soon as we got ___________ the plane, we were happy to be on solid ground again.
4. We are flying _________ Hamburg _________ 11th August.
5. __________ the end, we decided to move out of the flat.

The most common questions at the interview

Motivational questions are designed to check how serious you are about applying for a particular job or course. These questions could include:
  • Why do you want to do this job / course?
  • What do you know about our organisation / institution? Why would you find us interesting to work for / study with?
  • Which aspects of the job / course interest you most?
  • What do you think will be the main challenges of this job / course? Why does that appeal to you?
  • What steps have you taken to find out more about the job role / course?
  • Which aspects of your previous work experience / course have you enjoyed and why?
  • Tell us about a current news story that has caught your attention and why it interests you. How might it relate to our organisation / institution?
Questions like this highlight how important it is to do plenty of preparation so that you understand what sort of job or course you are applying for and know as much as possible about the organisation or institution.
The interviewer is looking for evidence that you have the skills that they need and so may ask questions such as:
  • Give an example of when you worked in a team to complete a task. What was your role and what did you contribute?
  • Tell us about a situation where you’ve had to overcome a difficult problem.
  • Describe an occasion when you have had to manage your time to achieve a deadline. What happened and how did you meet the deadline?
  • Can you give an example of when you have done work that required a high degree of accuracy? How do you ensure that your work is accurate?
  • Outline a situation where you’ve had to communicate complex information in an easy-to-understand way.
  • Tell us about a time when you have had to deal with someone who was angry or upset. How did you deal with it?

    Use STAR

  • STAR stands for:

    • Situation - provide some brief details about the situation you were in when you used a competency so that the reader can understand the context of the example.
    • Task - outline what your objective or purpose was during that situation, again to put your answer into context.
    • Action - describe what you did in that situation and how you approached it.
    • Result - state the outcome, for example: Were the objectives met? What did you learn/gain from being in that situation?

    • Strength-based questions

A number of employers are beginning to introduce ‘strength-based questions’ into interviews. They focus on what you enjoy doing and what you are particularly good at rather than what you can do, so be prepared to be open and honest.
Consider your achievements not just in your studies and at work but also in activities such as sports, interest groups or volunteering. Think about what aspects you enjoy and why you are good at them. This should help you to understand your strengths and prepare you for strength-based questions.
Types of questions that are looking for strengths include:
  • How do you know if you’ve had a good day?
  • Describe something that you learnt recently.
  • What activities come naturally to you?
  • Would you prefer to be a big fish in a small pond or a small fish in a big pond?
  • Describe your favourite interest outside of your work or studies.
  • What have you done that you are most proud of? Why was it significant?
  • What are your greatest strengths? When do you use them?
  • Sometimes interviewers ask questions that are so unusual you’d never predict they’d come up at interview.
This is often done to test how quickly you can think on your feet and to see how well you respond when put under a bit of pressure. Examples include:
    • If I were an alien, just landed on earth, what do you think are the three key issues I would need to know?
    • In a news story about your life, what would the headline be?
    • If you won £20 million on the Lotto, what would you spend the money on?
    • If you were a piece of fruit, what sort of fruit would you be?
    • If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
    • How do I rate as an interviewer?
The trick when answering these questions is firstly, don’t panic, and secondly, to think about how you can use the opportunity to demonstrate a positive personal characteristic or skill that you know the recruiter is looking for.
  • At the end of an interview, it is common for the interviewer to ask you if you have any questions for them. This is an ideal opportunity for you to show genuine interest in the job or course so it’s always a good idea to try to ask one or two questions.
  • Question 1: What is the main function of the department that I will be working in?Question 2: I see on your website that you work with employees to develop individual training and development plans. Could you tell me more about what training and development I might expect to help me progress in the organisation?
  • Question 3: What sort of opportunities are there for me to gain relevant work experience whilst I am studying?
  • Question 4: What salary, pension and other benefits may I expect to be offered by your organisation?
  • Question 5: I read in the newspaper last week that you are expanding into Europe. Is the organisation expanding into any other markets? What effect do you think this will have on the organisation in the short term and long term? How might this affect its employees?
  • Question 6: Would you mind if I briefly tell you about another of my achievements that I feel is relevant to the job / course, but which I haven’t yet had chance to talk about?

There are 1,053 institutions of general education in Kemerovo Oblast attended by nearly 313, 000 children.  Currently, Kuzbass can offer children quite a wide variety of schools and curricula so that they can make their own choices. About 16% of  schoolchildren study in specialized schools ('lyceum', 'gymnasia') and innovative schools and classes specializing in some particular disciplines.
Kemerovo Oblast is one of the first regions in Russia that started introducing the health component into education. There are already sixty-seven health improvement centres for schoolchildren in Kuzbass. In 2005 Governor Aman Tuleyev launched a new regional program 'Education and Health'.
Many educational institutions in Kuzbass are developing and introducing innovative teaching methods and curricula. Perhaps, this is the reason why over 100, 000 schoolchildren in the Oblast have but excellent grades. Every year about 150 children finish school with honours. Over 800 pupils take part in annual regional competitions in various disciplines showing their first research skills. For a few years now gifted children have been receiving targeted assistance (scholarships and grants) under the program 'Kuzbass is Proud of You'.
To support talented orphans and children from low-income and single-parent families and families having many children, the Oblast has launched an innovative social and educational project 'The Development of a Network of State Educational Institutions for Children in Need of State Support'. This project, supported by Governor Tuleyev, has already resulted in launching eight such institutions.
The educational system of Kemerovo Oblast is comprehensive and versatile. It covers children of all age groups and takes in account their individual needs. The system includes nearly 1000 pre-school institutions accommodating over eighty thousand children. There are also 166 centres of optional education in Kuzbass offering children various activities in such areas as technology, ecology and biology, tourism, sports and arts.

This year you will take your first serious exam. Don't be afraid!

The greatest barrier to success is the fear of failure.

There are some tips which can help you:

1.Spend the time!
The more time you spendwith the language the faster you will learn. This means listening, reading, writing, speaking and learning words and phrases. Spend your time enjoyably with the language you are learning.
2. Listen and read every day!
If you keep listening and reading, you will get used to the language. One hour of listening and reading is more effective than many hours of classwork.
3. Focus on words and phrases!
Build your vocabulary, you'll need a lot. Learn these words through your listening and reading. Use them in your speech.
4. Take responsibility for your own learning!
If you  do want to learn the language, take control. Don't wait for someone else to show you the language, nor to tell you what to do. A teacher can't teach you to be fluent, but you can learn if you want to.
5. Relax and enjoy yourself!
Don't worry about what you cannot remember or say. You are learning and improving. Just make sure you spend enough time with the language. that is the guarantee of success.
