Duration of life and its social implications

The world’s population is about to reach a landmark of huge social and economic importance, when the proportion of the global population over 65 outnumbers children under 5 for the first time. A new report by the US census bureau shows A __________, with enormous consequences for both rich and poor nations.
The rate of growth will shoot up in the next couple of years. __________ a combination of the high birth rates after the Second World War and more recent improvements in health that are bringing down death rates at older ages. Separate UN forecasts predict that the global population will be more than nine billion by 2050.
The US census bureau was the first to sound C __________. Its latest forecasts warn governments and international bodies that this change in population structure will bring widespread challenges at every level of human organization, starting with the structure of the family, which will be transformed as people live longer. This will in turn place new burdens on careers and social services providers, D __________ for health services and pensions systems.
“People are living longer and, in some parts of the world, healthier lives,” the authors conclude. “This represents one of the greatest achievements of the last century but also a significant challenge E __________ population.”
Ageing will put pressure on societies at all levels. One way of measuring that is to look at the older dependency ratio, F __________ that must be supported by them. The ODR is the number of people aged 65 and over for every 100 people aged 20 to 64. It varies widely, from just six in Kenya to 33 in Italy and Japan. The UK has an ODR of 26, and the US has 21.

Nenets Culture affected by Global Warming
For 1,000 years the indigenous Nenets people have migrated along the 450-mile-long Yamal peninsula in northern Russia. In summer they wander northwards, taking their reindeer with them. In winter they return southwards.
But this remote region of north-west Siberia is now being affected by global warming. Traditionally the Nenets travel across the frozen River Ob in November __________ around Nadym. These days, though, this annual winter migration is delayed. Last year the Nenets, together with many thousands of reindeer, had to wait until late December __________.
“Our reindeer were hungry. There wasn’t enough food,” Jakov Japtik, a Nenets reindeer herder, said. “The snow is melting sooner, quicker and faster than before. In spring it’s difficult for the reindeer to pull the sledges. They get tired,” Japtik said.
Herders say that the peninsula’s weather is increasingly unpredictable – with unseasonal snowstorms __________, and milder longer autumns. In winter, temperatures used to go down to -50°C. Now they are normally around -30°C, according to Japtik. “Obviously we prefer-30°C. But the changes aren’t good for the reindeer __________,” he said, setting off on his sledge to round up his reindeer herd.
Here, in one of the most remote parts of the planet, there are clear signs __________. Last year the Nenets arrived at a regular summer camping spot and discovered that half of their lake had disappeared. The water had drained away after a landslide. The Nenets report other curious changes – there are fewer mosquitoes and a strange increase in flies. Scientists say there is unmistakable evidence __________.

1.
when the reindeer give birth in May
2.
that Yamal’s ancient permafrost is melting
3.
that the impact on Russia would be disastrous
4.
when the ice was finally thick enough to cross
5.
the environment is under pressure
6.
and set up their camps in the southern forests
7.
and in the end what is good for the reindeer is good for us

Laughing and evolution

The first hoots of laughter from an ancient ancestor of humans could be heard at least 10 million years ago, according to the results of a new study.
Researchers used recordings of apes and babies being tickled __________ to the last common ancestor that humans shared with the modern great apes, which include chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans.
The finding challenges the opinion __________, suggesting instead that it emerged long before humans split from the evolutionary path that led to our primate cousins, between 10m and 16m years ago.
“In humans, laughing can be the strongest way of expressing how much we are enjoying ourselves, but it can also be used in other contexts, like making fun of someone,” said Marina Davila Ross, a psychologist at Portsmouth University. “I was interested in C __________.”
Davila Ross travelled to seven zoos around Europe and visited a wildlife reserve in Sabah, Borneo, to record baby and juvenile apes __________. Great apes are known to make noises that are similar to laughter when they are excited and while they are playing with each other.
Davila Ross collected recordings of laughter from 21 chimps, gorillas, orangutans and bonobos and added recordings of three babies that were tickled to make them laugh.
To analyze the recordings, the team put them into a computer program. “Our evolutionary tree based on these acoustic recordings alone showed __________, but furthest from orangutans, with gorillas somewhere in the middle.” said Davila Ross. “What this shows is strong evidence to suggest F __________.”

1.
that laughter is a uniquely human trait
2.
to create the evolutionary tree linking humans and apes
3.
while their caretakers tickled them
4.
that laughing comes from a common primate ancestor
5.
to trace the origin of laughter back

I. You are going to read a magazine article about marathon running. Seven sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A-H the one which fits each gap (1-6). There is one extra sentence which you do not need to use. There is an example at the beginning.

Marathon running – a recipe for health? If ever there was living proof that marathon running keeps you fit, Jenny Wood Allen from Dundee is it. (0 – H) She was 71 and she did not even have proper training shoes then. At first she could only run to the end of her avenue, which is about three quarters of a mile. She had problems getting back and had to either take a bus or ask somebody for a lift. (1 - ) Scientifically speaking, human beings are perfectly tuned for jumping and running and walking long distances. (2 - ) One of them, Professor Craig Sharp says that if you are reasonably fit, you can probably run for two hours at a medium pace and feel OK. At this point your muscles run out of glycogen – the best source of energy we have. This means you start using fat for energy, and your body has to work harder to transform fat into energy. This happens at a time when you are starting to feel exhausted. (3 - ) All this is proof – he believes – that the body isn’t designed for long-distance running. Other specialists have a very different opinion. Dr Percy Brown believes that if you train sensibly and prepare several months in advance, it could even help you live longer. (4 - ) He believes the only problem you may have when running a marathon is exhaustion or a small injury caused by falling or tripping over things. (5 - ) Only 1 in 1,000 actually makes it to hospital. Another problem may be post-race exhaustion. Surveys show most runners are much more likely to catch colds or develop chest infections in the week after running a race. (6 - ) There is no evidence of lasting disease or an increased risk of illness. At 87, Jenny Wood Allen would be doing the London marathon for the 13th time this Sunday. And she plans to go on taking part for many years to come.

A He argues that after 16-20 miles, you have to slow down and running gets really hard.
b. After a quick top up of water and a rest, most go home and make a full recovery.
c. When it comes to marathon running, however, the experts are divided.
d. In spite of this, marathon running is bad for your health.
e. But this weakening effect on the system is short-lived.
f.Within a couple of months, however, she was managing two or three miles.
g.This is because running halves your risk of getting heart disease.
h. She started by running to the shops, wearing an anorak and carrying her shopping bag

The most common questions at the interview

Motivational questions are designed to check how serious you are about applying for a particular job or course. These questions could include:
  • Why do you want to do this job / course?
  • What do you know about our organisation / institution? Why would you find us interesting to work for / study with?
  • Which aspects of the job / course interest you most?
  • What do you think will be the main challenges of this job / course? Why does that appeal to you?
  • What steps have you taken to find out more about the job role / course?
  • Which aspects of your previous work experience / course have you enjoyed and why?
  • Tell us about a current news story that has caught your attention and why it interests you. How might it relate to our organisation / institution?
Questions like this highlight how important it is to do plenty of preparation so that you understand what sort of job or course you are applying for and know as much as possible about the organisation or institution.
The interviewer is looking for evidence that you have the skills that they need and so may ask questions such as:
  • Give an example of when you worked in a team to complete a task. What was your role and what did you contribute?
  • Tell us about a situation where you’ve had to overcome a difficult problem.
  • Describe an occasion when you have had to manage your time to achieve a deadline. What happened and how did you meet the deadline?
  • Can you give an example of when you have done work that required a high degree of accuracy? How do you ensure that your work is accurate?
  • Outline a situation where you’ve had to communicate complex information in an easy-to-understand way.
  • Tell us about a time when you have had to deal with someone who was angry or upset. How did you deal with it?

    Use STAR

  • STAR stands for:

    • Situation - provide some brief details about the situation you were in when you used a competency so that the reader can understand the context of the example.
    • Task - outline what your objective or purpose was during that situation, again to put your answer into context.
    • Action - describe what you did in that situation and how you approached it.
    • Result - state the outcome, for example: Were the objectives met? What did you learn/gain from being in that situation?

    • Strength-based questions

A number of employers are beginning to introduce ‘strength-based questions’ into interviews. They focus on what you enjoy doing and what you are particularly good at rather than what you can do, so be prepared to be open and honest.
Consider your achievements not just in your studies and at work but also in activities such as sports, interest groups or volunteering. Think about what aspects you enjoy and why you are good at them. This should help you to understand your strengths and prepare you for strength-based questions.
Types of questions that are looking for strengths include:
  • How do you know if you’ve had a good day?
  • Describe something that you learnt recently.
  • What activities come naturally to you?
  • Would you prefer to be a big fish in a small pond or a small fish in a big pond?
  • Describe your favourite interest outside of your work or studies.
  • What have you done that you are most proud of? Why was it significant?
  • What are your greatest strengths? When do you use them?
  • Sometimes interviewers ask questions that are so unusual you’d never predict they’d come up at interview.
This is often done to test how quickly you can think on your feet and to see how well you respond when put under a bit of pressure. Examples include:
    • If I were an alien, just landed on earth, what do you think are the three key issues I would need to know?
    • In a news story about your life, what would the headline be?
    • If you won £20 million on the Lotto, what would you spend the money on?
    • If you were a piece of fruit, what sort of fruit would you be?
    • If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
    • How do I rate as an interviewer?
The trick when answering these questions is firstly, don’t panic, and secondly, to think about how you can use the opportunity to demonstrate a positive personal characteristic or skill that you know the recruiter is looking for.
  • At the end of an interview, it is common for the interviewer to ask you if you have any questions for them. This is an ideal opportunity for you to show genuine interest in the job or course so it’s always a good idea to try to ask one or two questions.
  • Question 1: What is the main function of the department that I will be working in?Question 2: I see on your website that you work with employees to develop individual training and development plans. Could you tell me more about what training and development I might expect to help me progress in the organisation?
  • Question 3: What sort of opportunities are there for me to gain relevant work experience whilst I am studying?
  • Question 4: What salary, pension and other benefits may I expect to be offered by your organisation?
  • Question 5: I read in the newspaper last week that you are expanding into Europe. Is the organisation expanding into any other markets? What effect do you think this will have on the organisation in the short term and long term? How might this affect its employees?
  • Question 6: Would you mind if I briefly tell you about another of my achievements that I feel is relevant to the job / course, but which I haven’t yet had chance to talk about?
